Sugar’s not so sweet

I’d like to talk about the not-so-sweet truth about sugar and how it sabotages your health. First of all, did you know that the average American gets 20% of their calories from sugar? It is estimated that the average person eats a whopping 136 pounds of sugar a year!
Unfortunately many young people eat an even greater amount. Sugar is an empty calorie food, meaning that you are taking in calories that have no nutritional value to fuel your body.
Have you ever noticed that once you have something sweet it leaves you wanting more and more? You’ve just hopped on the sugar treadmill. You get the sugar high and then crash, as your blood glucose levels swing wildly up and down. Sugar is the drug of choice for many people and it is not without consequences.

The Power of Sports Specific Training

The human body is such an amazing thing. It is incredible what it is capable of when it is nourished and trained well. This is most obvious with athletes. Athlete training has come a long way. We live in a time where the awesome training techniques that professionals have used for years are finally becoming mainstream. I’m talking about sport specific training and it is without a doubt the way to go when training for a specific sport or activity.
With sport specific training you are actually training your body in the planes of motion and situations that mimic your sport. You train for endurance and power in conjunction to the skills you need in your sport.
Conventional training had athletes going to weight rooms and ‘lifting’ no matter what sport they were participating in. That makes absolutely no sense and unfortunately is still being played out at many high schools and colleges today. Read more

Where to go for motivation

When it comes to working out, where do you get your motivation? Those of you who are following an exercise regimen may have the answer to that question, but what about those of you who don’t. Do you see motivation as this mysterious thing that you hear about and wish would come down from above, capture you and take you to the gym? Even the most motivated people will tell you that it is not that easy. Everyone has times when they just don’t want to do it, and I mean everyone.
So, where can we get some good old-fashioned motivation? The truth is, it is very individual. Many people start an exercise program to lose weight. I guess I can’t say that that is not a good reason as it is very common. But I do think it is better when there are other factors involved. Weight loss doesn’t happen overnight and if that is your only goal, you may get discouraged. Read more

It’s Not East Being Vegan

It’s not easy being vegan and especially in this business. I don’t mean that it is a difficult lifestyle; I embrace it and love it and would never consider living any other way. What I mean is that often we are made to feel like either an outcast or a target.

Case in point, the other day I was at the store and ran into a friend who was there with his wife. The friend mentions in passing that I’m a vegan and his wife gives me a look as if I was standing there naked or something and proceeds to tell me how crazy that is. This is just one mild example. Why do people get so upset by my choice to not eat the flesh of a dead animal? I am not hurting anyone and frankly it has nothing to do with them. I do have theories though.
