Tips on how to handle, ‘Generation Y’ athletes

The following are tips from coaches on what they see and how they handle athletes who fall in the category of ‘Generation Y’. An email came to me from a coach, Rob, asking me to reach out to others for help with this generation of athletes. I did and got a few nice responses.

Generation Y meaning youngsters who get praise for ANYTHING they do, instead of getting praise for things that truly deserve praise. If a volleyball player gets a serve over the net that is great, but it is worth a high five, $10, a shopping spree or Player of the Game from mommy or daddy? NOPE! :)

Here are some good tips from volleyball coaches and how they see it and handle it. ENJOY!

Seattle Mariners – ‘Look Ma, NO WEIGHTS’!

Tips on how to handle, Generation Y athletes You may have heard about it.

The Seattle Mariners have removed their weight room. All that remains are a few benches and light dumbbells.

This is very similar to my studio where I train ALL my athletes. The Mariners obviously have a little bit more money than me, so they have Keiser equipment all over. I simply have handicap bars on the wall with flexible resistance bands attached. That’s it!

Here is the article from the Seattle Times where Dr. Marcus Elliott explains what they have started this year. There is also a video, but it is lenghty. Mariners New Weight Room

Kuddos to the Mariners for stepping up to the plate to show the world that the old days of just ‘hitting the weight room’ is NOT the way to drastically improve athletic performance at the same time prevent injury.

Throwing in the ‘white flag’ at the college level, REALLY?

Honestly, I am not quite sure where to begin….

So I will get right to it..

Sunday night I noticed an update on an ex-client and good friends Facebook Wall. He plays D3 volleyball.

It read: “I Quit” is one sentence that isn’t in my vocabulary…..this weekend will haunt me for a long time”

As a friend, this concerned me. So I emailed him to see if all is OK and if he needs to chat he can get in touch with me.

He IM’d (instant messaged) me immediately.

and one thing he said made me think of ALL the coaches I work with
and who are on my email list.
It is as follows:
'When you make a choice to do one thing, you are making a choice NOT to do another'.
Hmmmmm....

This is what is taking place in the year 2010 and it is sickening!

OK….Can I just start off by saying I am VERY PISSED off right now!?

Why?

WE have been failed yet one more time by our ‘doctors’ and ‘gym teachers’.

How?

First, the doctors..

My client showed me her food journal this morning after I requested to see it after the last session. I was completely shocked! ‘What the heck you’re not freaking eating!’ I said…she yelled back, ‘yes, I am and THEY said I am eating too much’. (yes, we yell at each other :) )

Who is ‘they’ I ask. ‘My doctors’..hmmmmmmm….
