This coach has it ‘Going On’

Below is an email I received from Coach Roscoe.
It was very inspiring and I ask if I can share with you. He was more than happy to share.
In response to Roscoe’s email I ask him a few questions that will not only help volleyball coaches, but ALL coaches, parents and athletes.
It is so true that we can all learn from each other.
Below Roscoe’s original email are my questions to him and his answers in RED.
ENJOY and please leave comments or email me with what works for you as an athlete or coach to achieve success.
Here ya go:
- what do you feel is your Number 1 priority when it comes to coaching at a small school with limited athletes? Is it ‘mental focus’, positive reinforcement, the types of drills you do etc?
The number one priority of our team was to serve others and give all the glory to God. A very close second was to love one another without exceptions. We established a goal and motto to take us thru the season. Our goal was to get to the AISA State Championship and win it. Our motto was “the time is now and the place is here. Now, about skills and focus all of our team members had to learn to control themselves so they could control the ball. Ball control wins games, matches and championships. Your girls will master a skill through correct repetitions of that skill many, many, repetitions.
- Any advice you have for fellow coaches, newbie coaches and athletes who are feeling down and out because they are not ‘the best’?
My advice to newbie coaches is make the game fun, don’t take it seriously and Lord please don’t yell at your players during a match. Do all of your coaching in practice and be the best cheerleader you can be for your team during matches. My advice to players who are not where they want to be as in being the best is “you trying the best that you can makes you the very best player you can be.” When you play your best then in my eyes you are a champion. In my experiences and the many championships my teams have won over the years. The one I cherish the most is second place finish in California because our girls left everything on the court and in my eyes they were truly champions.
Lastly, Coaches use praise more in all that you do, I promise you great results.
- how do you think the exercises / workouts I provide have helped your team and your approach to training? Were you currently doing only ‘traditional’ weight training etc?
About fitness we have used your exercises for volleyball conditioning and voila! HELLO! It works.
Barry, when I got your training program I found we really didn’t need weights. You completely change the way I get players ready physically
OK…DO NOT run out an buy Training for Volleyball if you do not have it!
Seriously….
I know you may be stoked right now, but I have something pretty cool for you.
We received a few hundred emails from coaches and parents when we put together the ‘Done for You Volleyball Coaching’ special.
I think I have an answer..
Stay Tuned……just a few more days
Thanks for your time and I hope you got at least one thing from Roscoe.
